SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCH FREEBIE

PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCH FREEBIE Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie Spanish Christmas word search features fourteen common Spanish Christmas words, which helps to develop students’ awareness of some Spanish Christmas vocabulary and customs, such as la Nochebuena and el turrón. I use this as a prompt to stimulate discussion about Spanish Christmas practices and traditions, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too. There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are absolutely essential for me, as they provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, help them develop more independence in their learning, and they genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ each others’ work - additionally, they’re a great teacher time-saver, which is always a bonus! The word searches are in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading from left to right for speakers of English as a first or home language, facilitating their engagement with the activity. Have a browse in my store for more Spanish Christmas activities, and a wide range of other Spanish teaching and learning materials, with special offer bundles, resources boxes, and lots of freebies too! FRENCH CHRISTMAS VOCABULARY LIST FREEBIE

PRIMARY FRENCH KS3 FRENCH YEAR 7 FRENCH CHRISTMAS WORDS & PICTURES A great French Christmas picture & vocabulary reference resource for younger learners of French. It works well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. There are 20 common French Christmas words with pictures that I’ve found ideal for children learning French. I’ve used a blend of masculine and feminine nouns, definite article and indefinite article and there are some plurals too. I use this to stimulate discussion about articles, the concept of gender in French (which is often quite contrary to some learners’ first language, such as English), and forming the plural in French. It’s also great for promoting discussion about Christmas traditions and practices in France and French regions, as well as other French-speaking countries, comparing them to other Christmas customs with which students are familiar. Over time, I encourage students to add to the list - by the end of their French learning programme, they’ll have a comprehensive French Christmas vocabulary bank. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Christmas colours (which I tend to use as part of a French Christmas display), and blackline snow. Have a browse in my store for more French Christmas resources, and a wide range of other French teaching and learning materials, with special offer bundles, French resource boxes, and lots of freebies. Files are non-editable in a zipped format. They are copyright, all rights reserved. They may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed in any way outside your own classroom. EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES QUIZ 1 SAMPLER

(1)
EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES QUIZ SAMPLER This is a sampler of six questions and answers from the full European Day of Languages Quiz 1: The full set outline is as follows: IDEAL TEAM OR CLASS QUIZ FOR THE EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES - AND AS A YEAR-ROUND GENERAL KNOWLEDGE QUIZ! The quiz features 100 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible responses. It’s perfect for developing students’ awareness, understanding and knowledge of all things European. The questions range from basic general knowledge to more specialised factual knowledge. The themes and topics are: = arts & culture = famous people = food = geography = history = landmarks & monuments = language = literature = music; = politics = science = society. You can be Quiz Question Captain, but students do enjoy taking on that role in turns. The questions often stimulate further and deeper discussion about particular themes and topics - for example, the question regarding Eyjafjallajökull is a great example of a ‘modern-day’ volcano eruption, and the implications for both national and international communities - there are lots of good quality clips available online which students find interesting to watch and then discuss. I often prompt students for additional responses based on the answer options - for example The longest river in Europe, the Volga, runs through which countries? Which countries does the Danube or the Rhine run through? and so on. I always award extra points for this, which increases the competitive edge a little! The quiz is non-editable for copyright reasons. The first slide shows a map of Europe, which I use to discuss general geography and the range of European countries, some of which students may not be aware of. Each question slide is followed by a corresponding answer slide, with the correct response in capital letters. The quiz is ideal for whole-group or team quizzes, with students choosing a European-themed team name. Play in homeroom / form time or in any subject area lesson as a brain-break - the questions really are cross-curricular! I use the quiz several times at intervals across the school year - this really does put students’ memory and developing knowledge to the test. The quiz goes down particularly well on the European Day of Languages, and at key points in the school year: end of year, back to school, Christmas and so on. The full quiz is available here (£3): https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/european-day-of-languages-quiz-3-12578909 The quiz is non-editable in a zipped format. EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES EUROPE BUNTING FREE SAMPLER

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES This is a free Europe bunting sampler featuring five countries, their capital cities and flags: Austria, Estonia, Finland, Portugal and Slovakia. The full set is as follows: Create an instant introduction to Europe and brighten up your learning environment with this bunting showing European countries, capital cities and flags, giving your classroom a great multicultural look and feel. It’s an ideal display for the annual European Day of Languages and Europe Day festivals, and great as a year-round display resource. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the bunting does help students develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Europe and its geography. The bunting works just as well in the geography classroom as the world languages classroom, aligning learning between language and knowledge of the world. I’ve also included a range of islands, such as the Faroe Islands, to extend students’ knowledge of Europe a little further, as well as several countries, for example Armenia, that are often classed as belonging either to Europe or to Asia. Each bunting banner has a small tag which I use to hang with a clip from a ‘washing line’ across the classroom and other learning areas - alphabetically works well, though non-alphabetically is perfect for a country quest activity! Laminate if you can - there’s a lot of prep, and certainly the bunting will use a lot of ink, but laminated the bunting will last for ever! The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use. ideal for Primary French and KS3 French My students love to do these word searches around Christmas time - we do them several times in the run up to Christmas - they really are great for developing reading, writing and spelling in French - and engaging with French Christmas vocabulary too - my older students really enjoy them too. There are 30 French Christmas words, which helps them to develop awareness of some Francophone Christmas traditions and figures, such as Saint Nicolas and Père Fouettard. I also use this as a prompt to stimulate discussion about French Christmas practices and customs, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too. Word searches are really easily differentiated: there are 5 French to French grids, as well as an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. There are also 5 English to French grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the French equivalent in the grid - they also have to complete the French word list on each page for extra spelling and vocabulary practice. The challenge gets more intense through the grids - students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. I always give answer keys to my word searches - that works really well in terms of helping students work and learn independently together without me, and gives them even more opportunity to engage with French. There’s a reference list of all the French Christmas words too - this is a really useful support resource to ensure all learners can do the searches. They’ll have to look carefully at some of the words though - for a little extra challenge, sometimes I’ve changed words slightly - such as using ‘an elf’, where the reference list shows ‘the elves’. CHRISTMAS IS COMING! Create a fabulous and festive multilingual Christmas feel in your learning environment with HAPPY CHRISTMAS BUNTING IN 30 LANGUAGES! I’ve used the Latin alphabet throughout. Print the bunting on card stock if possible, as it will hang really nicely, and last a lot longer! Paper is fine too as an alternative. The bunting hangs best using mini-pegs on string, but also looks good pinned directly to walls as a horizontal poster display. I like to cut out the triangle shape, particularly if I’m hanging the bunting on string across a particular space, but you can also print out and hang as an A4 poster if you prefer, as that’s a little less prep-intensive! B&W works well, but colour is best if possible! The languages featured are: Albanian Bulgarian Catalan Croatian Czech Danish English Esperanto Estonian Finnish French German Greek Icelandic Irish Gaelic Lithuanian Norwegian Polish Portuguese Romanian Russian Scottish Gaelic Serbian Spanish Swedish Welsh The resource consists of a single, non-editable file, and is copyright - it may not be copied or shared in any way. Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word, practising and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, focusing on Numbers 0-100 in English, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with the target vocabulary, but also aligning with cross-curricular learning - working on reading, writing, spelling, numeracy and language skills in generaL. Learners are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. As they move through the grids, their language skills are challenged in a range of ways - from straightforward vocabulary searching, to gap-fill, scrambled letters and sentence questions, which feature mathematical language in English and more complex linguistic structures. Hyphens are really important in English numbers, and the grids feature these quite clearly, in order to ensure that learners can practise this aspect of language. There are two formats to choose from - the search grids and answer keys as separate worksheets, and also a file with both grids and answer keys together, so that you can print each grid and key double-sided, according to which suits your classroom needs better. GEOGRAPHY EUROPE COUNTRIES & CAPITALS QUIZZES

KS3 GEOGRAPHY KS4 EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND CAPITAL CITIES - 2 QUIZZES WITH 120 MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS European countries & capitals multiple-choice quizzes are great games, suitable for any age range, at any time! I play them a lot, at different times of the school year, and with all different age groups. We keep a tally, so that we can track whether students are beating their own record. All students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, giving their memory a workout at the same time! The quizzes work really well as a whole-group team quiz, and are also perfect as a pair or small-group activity. The set contains all European countries & capital cities, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. Each question has 3 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in CAPITAL LETTERS, to ensure that all students can participate - they really enjoy being the quiz master! The quiz cards are numbered, but I prefer to ask in random order: we simply place all the cards in a bowl, box or tin, and work our way through! There are two quiz challenges - Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with three possible capital cities to choose from. Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with three possible countries to choose from. The quiz card templates allow students to put their memory and recall to the test in a different way, and to apply their knowledge very practically: they can create their own set of multiple-choice questions for each other. I always laminate my learning cards, as they’re far more user-friendly, and last for absolutely years! Each challenge has a different background - Europe map and green check - so that you and your students can easily identify which challenges the cards belong to, but I’ve also included the quizzes with no background, so that you can keep prep costs to a minimum. My students also find reference resources really useful - download this list of all European countries and capital cities for free here: EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND CAPITAL CITIES REFERENCE LIST https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/geography-europe-countries-and-capital-cities-reference-12128929 Please note this is the Geography World Continents Europe Countries & Capitas Quizzes version of my European Day of Languages Europe Countries & Capital Cities quizzes - please ensure you have not already purchased the European Day of Languages version. ANGLAIS ESL EFL ENGLISH FRUITS TASK CARDS ENGLISH FOR FRENCH SPEAKERS This resource consists of non-editable files in a zipped format. It is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. English Fruits Task Cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of fruits in English in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling longer words and more complex sentences in English. Sentence structure and word order may differ from students’ first and/or home language, so it’s important to provide them with opportunities to engage with language that moves beyond single-unit vocabulary as soon as possible. The questions are all in English, and range in complexity and challenge. I usually read through questions before my students work with the cards for the first time, to ensure that everyone understands any new or unknown language and structures. There are 35 fruits addressed in the task cards, and it’s unlikely that they are all in your teaching and learning plan. I always include additional vocabulary to add a little challenge, and to encourage students to think a little more creatively and independently. I’ve used definite, indefinite and partitive article, and singular and plural - this really helps students familiarize themselves with grammatical concepts, including the lack of noun gender in English, without explicit instruction. There are some translation questions too - both from French to English and English to French, which is a great introduction to translation for beginner to intermediate learners. I explain that there are several possible correct alternatives, as translation is not a word-for-word activity, which is definitely useful for them to know from the very beginning of their learning. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and grammatical concepts creatively and practically too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other, and I encourage them to use the existing questions as a frame of reference as they create their own. The resource comprises the following non-editable files: 36 differentiated question cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper 2-page answer recording sheet 2-page answer key 2-page alphabetical fruits list, English-French & French-English THANKS AND ENJOY YOUR ENGLISH LESSONS!

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES GAME

(0)
EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES COUNTRIES AND FLAGS I HAVE, WHO HAS? GAME - great for any time of the school year, and particularly in celebration of The European Days of Languages and Europe Day! All my students, regardless of age, love this game - it’s whole-group, lively & communicative - the repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the flags, makes it perfect for learning the countries of Europe and their flags. The aim of the game is to make an alphabetical country line as quickly as possible, starting with the first card, Albania, and ending with the final card, Wales. Students will probably have several cards each, depending on the size of your group. I tend to play with a timer, as that adds a little edge to the game - I also like to play in teams too, for which we use several sets of cards. We start of with a rapid whole-group warm-up, asking simple questions such as How many European countries can you name in 15 seconds? and so on. Laminate the cards, as they’re far sturdier, and easier to work with, and will last for absolutely years! There are four cards per A4 (8.5x11) landscape format page - great size for everyone to see the words and flags really clearly. EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES ACTIVITIES WORKSHEETS European countries, capital cities and flags label and colour worksheets provide great learning opportunities for any appropriate age group, at any time of the school year, and are definitely the perfect activity for consolidating knowledge of these countries and flags - students definitely really enjoy testing their memory and colouring the flags! Students can develop their knowledge of Europe, its countries, capital cities and flags, independently of the teacher. There are 60 European countries included - there may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the worksheets help them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Europe and the wider world. There is a country, capital city and flag reference list of all countries and capitals, which students find useful to read through before working on the sheets - I laminate these, and one list per small group of 5-6 students is sufficient. It can also be used as a year-round reference resource, which students can file in their workbooks or learning folders. Laminate the cards and reference sheets if you can - you will be able to use them for years to come. There are four sets of worksheets, each with six pages: Set 1: color flags, students label with country and capital city Set 2: blank flags, students label country and capital city, and color the flags - a number of flags look very similar on these worksheets, which helps students recall all the countries in Europe, and their flags Set 3: blank flags, country is given, students label capital city, and color the flags Set 4: blank flags, capital city is given, students label country, and color the flags Please note this is the European Day of Languages version of European Flags Label & Colour which is also available in my Geography World Continents collection - please ensure you have not already purchased that version Files are non-editable in a zipped format. SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES #1

PRIMARY SPANISH KS3 SPANISH CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES Sopas de letras are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 33 Spanish Christmas words, which I also use as a prompt to stimulate discussion about Spanish Christmas practices and customs, and we talk about what students know about other Christmas traditions around the world. The nouns feature masculine and feminine, singular and plural and both definite and indefinite articles, which is a great way of working on and consolidating those grammatical concepts too. There are 5 Spanish to Spanish grids, where students are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There are also 5 English to Spanish grids, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in Spanish, they also complete the Spanish word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are absolutely essential for me, as they provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, help them develop more independence in their learning. There’s a Spanish-English Christmas vocabulary reference sheet - you can either laminate this to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general reference resource. Students will have to look carefully at some of the words they’re looking for, as they may appear slightly differently - for example, they may have to find the gifts and work out what that is in Spanish - only the prompt the gift appears in the reference list. FRENCH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES WORD WALL

FRENCH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES WORD WALL LES PAYS FRANCOPHONES I like my learners to understand the scope of the French-speaking world from the very beginning of their learning - it gives them a real understanding of the importance of French, and how widely it is spoken throughout the world. It’s easy to create and instant introduction to Les pays francophones with this word wall showing a range of world countries and territories where French is an official language and / or very widely-spoken. Each card shows the continent, country and capital city in French, and its national flag, and together they give the classroom a great multicultural look and feel. At the same time, the word wall promotes French as a living language, spoken across the globe, and featuring in the everyday life of your learning environment. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the word wall definitely helps them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Les pays francophones - students are often genuinely amazed at the scope of the French-speaking world - French is spoken on every continent! I’ve used the definite article, as I’ve found that this helps embed the concept of gender in French, and that proper nouns, such as countries, are subject to gender agreement rules too There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format - the fonts is sufficiently large for students to be able to read from various locations in the classroom, which ensures you can definitely get the most from it - we do lots of recall and recognition games, spelling and geography quizzes and so on. There are two header cards : Ici on parle français and Les pay francophones. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag or black wave. I definitely recommend that you print on card stock and/or laminate for longevity - you’ll be able to enjoy your French-speaking Countries word wall for years to come! Have a look at this French Numbers 0-21 word wall - it’s free to download, and the design format is the same as this word wall - you’ll be able to see if it’s the right kind of display word wall for your classroom: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/primary-french-numbers-0-21-word-wall-12098682 The product is non-editable in a zipped format. EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES : LANGUAGES FACTS #1

EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES FACTS ABOUT LANGUAGES This set of 36 facts cards focuses on world languages, and is a great whole-group learning activity at any time of the school year, and particularly on or around the annual European Day of Languages. The activity also works well as an ice-breaker in the back-to-school phase, as it’s a very social activity, and really gets students up from their desks, walking around talking to each other. The information addresses a very wide range of languages topics, from world history, history of language, varied fields within linguistics to global languages facts for example. The cards are designed for older students, as the facts do require a certain level of world knowledge and language awareness, and particularly world geography. I always screen a world map first, pointing out continents, countries, regions and territories and so on, because using the cards is also a great way of actually learning about the world, its history, shifting geographical and political borders, migrating populations and so on. I use the cards in various ways: for example, a really popular method is the walk and talk activity, where students take a card each, walk around the classroom, exchanging facts - when they’ve shared the information on their card, students swap cards, and carry on walking — in this way, they encounter the same facts a couple of times, which really embeds knowledge. I tend to do this activity several times across the school year, following it up with an informal whole-group quiz, particularly when I feel that students need a break from more formal learning. I also use the cards as either entrance or exit cards - again, followed by a quick quiz at several points in the year - simply turn the language on the individual cards into a question format. This works really well when students quiz each other, which moves them away from teacher-led learning towards more independent and social learning.
